What Exactly is Web Hosting?

Web Hosting in the simplest terms is parking your website on the internet. An even similar way to think of it is, purchasing a car park in a building complex. Having a valet take your car(website) and park it in a car space (allocated server space). Once your website is made available on the internet, it can be accessed by other computers connected to the internet.

Web Hosting

How Does it all Work?

Web hosts such as 2025.hosting-australia.com/ rent out their services and technologies to host websites on the internet. Once the hosting company hosts your website, users can access it by typing in your domain name in their web browser. When this domain name is typed into the user’s browser this connects the computer to a server your website is hosted on. The server then sends back files that are stored on the server to the user’s computer and displays it on your web browser.

Which web hosting package is right for you?

There is a wide range of web hosting packages here at 2025.hosting-australia.com/ to suit website needs.

Importance of a Domain Name

A Domain Name is a vital part of any website. Without the Domain Name, it would be almost impossible to establish and distinguish one website from another.  This name alerts and attracts customers to your website by telling them who, where and what your business does. Without a Domain Name, it would be the same as having a store in a shopping centre without any signage.

Why do Domain Names expire?

Once your website is up and running it can be easy to overlook some aspects of the business and you may forget that your Domain Name is a temporary thing. You could one day receive an email and it’s too late, there are a variety of ways this might occur:

Auto-renew is disabled

If you do not have Auto Renew enabled in your client area your Domain Name could expire without you realizing. Setting up Auto Renew is easily done by logging into the 2025.hosting-australia.com/ client area. To find this option go to Domains, My Domains, Manage Domain and check the Auto Renew for your selected domain.

Renewal Reminders go to spam

2025.hosting-australia.com/ will always make sure you are reminded by sending reminder emails to your primary email account before expiration. These can still be missed if these messages are going to your junk/spamfolder. It is important, depending on your mail client, to set reminders and rules, so this does not happen.

Outdated Billing Information

It is easy to forget all the sites, services, subscriptions you have tied to a specific card when it has expired or been lost. You could have the auto-renew set up on your account as previously stated but still have a domain expired because your card has expired. 2025.hosting-australia.com/ will get in contact with you via our support ticket system and phone as soon as this problem arises.

Multiple Domain providers

You may have registered Domain Names in the past with other providers, this is one of the easiest ways to forget about the renewal of a Domain. It is much easier to make payments, check domain name expirations and manage your Domains if they are all in the same place. You can easily do this by getting in contact with one of our support staff, we will be more than happy to transfer your existing domains over to be managed by us at 2025.hosting-australia.com/.

Keep Your Domain

The best way for your Domain Name not to expire is to do everything in your power to have these safe nets in place, just in case one of these methods fail. Enabling auto-renew, checking your spam, updating your billing information, and having all your Domains managed by the same company.

We understand at 2025.hosting-australia.com/ Domain Names play a crucial part in every business. Therefore our support team is ready and waiting for any of your Domain name needs.

How to Choose a Hosting Provider

Important factors to ensure the best hosting are Speed, Support, Security. As your site grows you need to be sure your bigger, more popular website can still load fast and allow all large surges of higher traffic.

Hosting services are available in a wide range of prices ranging from a few dollars a month to thousands of dollars. A small business just getting a web presence, a shared hosting service is the best way to start. This gives you all you need regarding disc space, bandwidth and support. Leaving the support and management to the experts.

Virtual Private Server (VPS) is an open for a business that has outgrown shared services. Maybe you need more space or need to run applications that aren’t available on shared server. However you will need to manage it all yourself. After all a VPS is YOUR server so you are responsible for the running and management of the server and your websites. So a high level of knowledge is required.
Hosting prices can vary from just AU$4 / month up to AU$100 / month. This will depend on your needs and what you get for the plan.

What does Hosting and Support Mean?

All Hosting Providers offer similar offerings. Web and Email Hosting, Email Only, DNS Hosting. Basic customer service provides access to email, ticket and phone support.

The main difference is in support. Turnaround time on requests, Ticket Response times, Even just answering the phone. Some service providers will offer 24-hour phone support.
Bear in mind hosting support includes,
1. Server Maintenance and support
2. General troubleshooting and advice
3. Domain and hosting related management
4. Service renewals to ensure you don’t lose your domain or your services go offline.
5. Regular backups (used as a last resort for restores if required)

Hosting Support Doesn’t include

1. Website maintenance
2. Web development or changes to site
3. IT related issues such as fixing your email client, exporting email
However at Hosting Australia we do provide the above support but it will be charged at a reasonable rate. This means you don’t have to go find a developer to fix or maintain your website.

Managed Services

Although the above support isn’t included in the normal hosting package, Hosting Australia can help with development and management with our Managed Services Packages. This allows you to leave it all to us. Your site is managed and updated on a regular basis to keep it all up to date and secure. It also includes changes to content and images as required but does not include design changes.
If you don’t want to use a monthly Managed Services Package then we will still support your site as required but quote on an ad hoc basis to work on the site when you need.

Estimate the amount of traffic you expect

Some plans will include a limit on Bandwidth. This is the amount of traffic coming to your site. Just starting our your site won’t generate a lot of traffic but when it does upgrading your site to a higher level is very easy.

Also your site may be seasonal. If your normal traffic is low but when you have an event and promote it you may find that your traffic suddenly spikes for a few weeks before the event and during. So you will need to allow for this and make sure you have enough bandwidth to handle the traffic. Rather than upgrading your hosting package you may just need to use an Add On package for the period of the event.

Where are the Servers?

Server location is important to a lot of people. Having servers overseas can affect your site speed and even more important support level due to time zones. Hosting Australia staff and servers are all in Australia and fully Australian owned.

Choose a portable application to avoid lock-in

There are some hosts that promote a simple web builder to instantly build a “great” site. Companies such as WIX, Weebly among others offer this server. What they don’t mention is that once the site is built it is locked to their servers because you are using their site building software. This doesn’t allow you to move your hosting if you find they don’t provide the support or service you expect. This means you need to build a whole new site just to move away from them.
You most probably will prefer the option to move if you need so a portable hosted CMS is the best way to go and your host can help you with migrating your site and email when you pick a new provider.

What is DNS, what does it Stand for?

The domain name system (DNS) is a collection of databases that translates hostnames to IP addresses. The easiest way to think of DNS is like the old yellow pages (Phone book).

DNS converts hostnames such as 2025.hosting-australia.com/, to IP address such as 151.139.128.10. Typing the IP address instead of the hostname will still display the same site. With this said, Without DNS, it would be exceedingly difficult to navigate the internet. You would need to remember every sites’ IP address rather than a name.  You may have had to adjust your DNS records before, but not fully understood which each induvial terminology means.

DNS Terminology

Name

This field specifies the DNS name, also known as the owner name, to which the RR belongs.

Type

This field is a 2-byte value that specifies the type of resource that is defined in the source record

TTL

Time to live in seconds. The amount of time the record can be cached. If a TTL 3600 means the record will update every hour.

Class

This defines the protocol family for the record such as A, MX, SRV, TXT.

we will talk more about theses in detail now!

Commonly used DNS records.

A Record

A, or Address record, is the most used record type. This record allows you to map a domain name to an IP address of the hosting domain. For example, to visit 2025.hosting-australia.com/, you go to the URL www.hosting-australia.com. At our nameserver, there is an A record that points to the IP address 151.139.128.10. this means that a request from your browser to www.hosting-australia.com is directed to the server with the IP address 151.139.128.10.

You can also include multiple A records for the same domain to provide redundancy and fallbacks. Additionally, multiple names could point to the same address, in which case each would have it own A record pointing to that same IP address.

Example of A Record

CNAME

A Canonical Name Record is more commonly known as the CNAME record. Is used to redirect from one domain name to another automatically. For example, if you wanted store.yourdomain.com to automatically redirect to your Shopify, you can add the CNAME record example below.

CNAME Record

TXT

A TXT record allows you to add text data into your DNS records. A common use is ownership verification. To prove you own the domain, a provider may require you to add a TXT record with a particular value to your domain.

TXT Record

MX

MX stands for mail exchange. The MX record points to the domain, not an IP address. Without the MX record, the domain will not receive mail. MX record points to the mail server that should be used to deliver mail from a domain using SMTP.

MX Record

SRV

SRV record helps with service discovery, for example, SRV records are used in internet telephony (Voice over IP) to define where a (Session Initiation Protocol) SIP service may be found. An SRV record typically defines a symbolic name and the transport protocol used a part of the domain name. it defines the priority, weight, port, and target for the service in the record content.

SRV Record

SPF

SPF record is a Sender Policy Framework record. It is used to indicate to mail exchanges which the host are authorized to send mail for the domain.  The SPF record is typically defined using the TXT record type. You should always have at least the TXT record definition present, even if you use the SPF type.

SPF Record

If you ever need to edit your DNS record you may easily do this via your cPanel, if you are unsure how to access your cPanel, you can find out how to by watching this how-to access cPanel video curiosity of 2025.hosting-australia.com/.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS), not to be confused with a Virtual Private Network (VPN), is a virtual machine that provides its own server to clients. The best way to think of the VPS is like an apartment complex. Every account is renting space within the building and has their own resources they can use, yet shares the building.

If you think of shared hosting, all the resources are spread across everyone on the server. The VPS has specific resources assigned to your account, allowing you to use them however you need.

The VPS runs its own copy of an operating system (OS), and you may have to request for superuser level access within the OS. This will enable you to be able to install almost any software that runs on that OS. This can be a much-preferred method for customers as it allows Linux OS to run servers.

We could get into the nitty-gritty of how these VPS’s work, but to keep things simple here are the features and benefits of choosing a VPS with 2025.hosting-australia.com/

Scalable: 2025.hosting-australia.com/ can upgrade your resources when requested. You can simply do this by sending a ticket to our support team or calling us on (07) 4914 2433. This is extremely handy to adapt to your business growth if you require more resources.

Have you ever spent all day/night working on a document? Spending countless hours making sure everything is perfect, only to wake up finding that all your hard work has gone missing or been deleted - sending you into a frenzy.

Imagine if you had that same problem, but it was something much more important, for example, the website for your business. You wake up more morning and your website ceases to exist. Your customers cannot find your website. You would have to put a hold on your business while you get in touch with your hosting or designer to create your website from the ground up again. Therefore, you should always backup your website just like backing up that important document.

It is imperative to back up your site files at a second location to keep your content safe. Still not convinced? Here are four compelling arguments for why you should always back up your site files:

1. You want a general safety net beyond your hosting service.

You might think your hosting service is safeguarding your site from hackers and other potential threats. While we do regular backups at 2025.hosting-australia.com/, it is important that you personally take a backup of your website, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your business.

2. The original version of your site has aged.

You might have built your website on your own computer and feel it is protected. However, as time goes on that version becomes dated. If you have added in more information, refreshing content, optimizing your websites plugins or for search engines. That initial version of the website will progressively further removed from the live site your customers are viewing every day.  It is important to take backups regularly, so there is less work when something does go wrong.

3. Respond quickly if you are hacked.

The statistics on hacking are remarkable, even startling. The National Cyber Security Alliance found that 20 percent of small businesses are compromised annually. Amazingly, three out of five organizations that get targeted are bankrupt within six months.

If you have a website no matter how big or small, there is always a possibility it will be targeted by hackers. You have enough concerns just dealing with passwords and trying to prevent intruders from invading again. Routine or daily backups allow you to recover lost, hacked, corrupted files or databases much more smoothly.

4. You want to have peace of mind.

Backup recovery plans are critical so that any website can maintain business continuity and achieve efficient, stress-free disaster recovery. It’s simple if you keep on top of your back-ups by making sure it is always updated and something to fall back on. It will give you peace of mind knowing you will have something to fall back on “if” something does ever go wrong, instead of wondering what you would do it if did.

So, don’t fall into that fatal mistake of thinking everything is safe and saved once you are finished with your work or website Make sure your website is backed up, once you get into the routine it will save a lot of headaches in the future.

IMAP VS POP3 the great debate, what are the advantages & disadvantages?
While understanding the differences, you need to consider the user and device that will use the mailbox.

To make it easy for you to understand you need to work out, what suits your individual needs.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)

The main difference between a POP3 account and an IMAP account is that emails and inboxes are not stored on your computer, they are stored on your providers' server connected to the IMAP account.
This allows all your mail to be perfectly synchronized. When you read your emails on different devices be it a mobile, tablet, computer, or even from webmail. All the devices will show the exact same emails, folder. If an email is sent or deleted from the IMAP account, it affects all of the other devices and syncs with the mail server.

Advantages

Disadvantages

POP3 (Post Office Protocol)

When the POP3 email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple mail) connects directly to the mail servers, it downloads the emails/attachments on to the email client. This will allow the emails to be locally stored on the device. You will not require to be connected to the internet to access these emails after they are on your device.

If the emails are deleted off your device they will not be deleted from the mail server. This will cause the mailbox on the server to reach storage capacity,  causing a blockage on your mailbox, with emails bouncing back to the sender, ceasing email functionality altogether.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Now that you can see the advantages and disadvantages of IMAP and POP3, you need to ask yourself what will now benefit you and your devices.

What is WordPress?

WordPress powers nearly one-third of the world’s websites, from small personal blogs to the complex sites of major corporations.  WordPress is only one of the site builders and content management systems users can download and install for free, but it is its ease of use for end users that makes it the most popular content management system in use today.

WordPress vs. the Competition

WordPress is one of three main site building packages in the world, including Joomla and Drupal. All are free to download and use, all come with numerous add-ons for specialised functionality, and all can be customized to suit the needs of individual users.

Basically its really only Joomla and WordPress as #1 and #2.  Up until a few years ago WordPress was essentially a good Blog Site tool whereas Joomla was far more flexible and powerful.   Most of the plugins you need to add to WordPress are already built into Joomla and until a few years ago this article would have been about Joomla.

However in that time WordPress has become far more than just a Blog tool and is now capable of building any type of site you need.  Whereas in Joomla has become too cumbersome and components and plugins tend to conflict with each other or are just incompatible with others causing errors in the site.

Benefits of using the WordPress Platform

Here’s a look at a few key benefits of using WordPress to set up and run your business or personal site.

  1. Flexible and Adaptable for Changing Needs

Although WordPress was originally designed to support blogging and related types of online publishing, it also powers a wide range of sites with other purposes. WordPress sites can start from simple blogs as before to full-service eCommerce stores.  You can display your portfolio, or host a social network, group, or podcast.

Whatever a company’s requirements, the core WordPress package plus a variety of basic and premium plugins that are suitable for your site.   Add to that a pre-installed range of free themes allows you to build a website for free.

  1. User-friendly—Even for Beginners

A WordPress site can be installed and up and running in a matter of minutes, even without any technical expertise. All a user needs is a domain name and a web hosting account. WordPress can be directly built on WordPress.org or installed free through your WordPress hosting provider.

  1. Themes Offer Multiple Options

WordPress themes offer users an array of choices for fine-tuning the appearance and functions of a new site, thanks to its large and growing directory basic and premium of themes. Many of these are instantly available to a new site owner through the WordPress theme directory, and thousands more can be purchased through design marketplaces and third-party designers from around the world. Themes can be previewed live and installed at any time to change the look and layout of a WordPress site.

  1. Plugins Extend Functionality

WordPress includes all the elements needed to create a basic site, but many users want more specialized functions related to a site’s specific needs. The WordPress plugin directory includes hundreds of plugins—small pieces of code designed to perform specific tasks—that allow users to add features such as shopping carts, galleries, contact forms, and more to any compatible WordPress site. Users can also purchase and install hundreds of custom plugins from third-party developers. Plugins can be activated or deactivated and uninstalled as needed as a site evolves.

  1. WordPress Sites Are Mobile Responsive

Mobile responsiveness is also a factor in Google rankings, so websites need to look good on any device. WordPress offers a variety of responsive theme designs, and users can also make a static site responsive with plugins and adjustments to theme files.

  1. WordPress Sites Have a Built-In Blog

Blogs are what WordPress does best.  Its what it was built on and has blog features built into the core installation.  These are called Posts and you can categorise them and display them however you like as all those functions are built in.

If you are building a WordPress site, you should consider a hosting provider that offers WordPress hosting. This will help save time and allow you to access your WordPress dashboard through your account.
